United Methodist Women

FEBRUARY 6, 2008

Vice President Shirley Goben called the meeting to order by leading the members in the UMW Purpose.  She then turned the meeting over to Pauline McElroy, Nominating Committee Chair.  The Nominating Committee presented the new officers of President, Juanita Rampy, and Membership-Outreach-Nurture, June Glaser.  Pauline suggested that at today’s meeting we make further nominations, elect officers, and install them.  There were no other nominations, and the membership approved the recommendation by acclamation.  Edith Noll installed the new officers (June Glaser in absentia).  She also charged all the members to support them with prayers.  Shirley Link expressed thanks to them and presented a mission ribbon to Juanita.  Juanita responded with thanks and expressed her desire that all work together.

The meeting continued with singing the hymn “Have Thine Own Way, Lord.”  Rev. Chris Dumas led the Church Eternal service, remembering the twelve women from our Church who died this year as well as others known by the members.

Mary Virginia Stapleton led the meditation on love.  Juanita Rampy prayed for requests for Doris Olsen, Nancy Duhamel, Emma Stockard, Lucille Hatton, Marion Mayes’ father, Janet Hofstetter’s father, Ann Maxwell’s daughter-in-law, Helen Little, and a family wanting to adopt a child.

The program on Misconceptions About Muslims, Part I was given by Janet Hofstetter.

The business meeting began with the minutes highlighted and approved.  Thank you notes have been received for end-of-the-year giving from Falba Core for Afghans for Angels, Agape, Rape and Abuse Crisis Service, Salvation Army, and Special Learning Center.  Also information was received on Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center and Personal Energy Transportation, the latter including a DVD which could be used for programs.

Treasurer Alice Gruner noted two corrections in the budget as printed in the UMW program book.  The two categories under Local Missions, Quilt supplies for Festival of Sharing and Kits for Festival of Sharing, should each be $200.  That makes the Total of Local Missions $1,550; the total expenses of $6,370 is correct.  She presented the report for both December and January, with the ending cash balance at the end of January at $1,246.43.  Disbursements included registration for Shirley Link and June Glaser to the Legislative Event; the theme this year is Health Care.  The Treasurer’s reports were approved.

Juanita asked for further reports.  Campbell labels are still needed but should not be torn on the UPC or on the “little man” of the logo.  Chili Day will be Monday, February 25.  Each lady should bring pies either Sunday or Monday morning.  Dorothy Williams asked for volunteers to help with carrots and celery on Sunday after Church and for pie cutters either Monday early morning or afternoon.  Ann Maxwell, chair of the bazaar, requested that each woman bring at least one good item for sale, and put them in Terena’s office.  For the silent auction, Jean James has made an afghan, and Shirley Link is giving a collector doll.  Volunteers for cleanup from 4:30 – 6:30 are still needed.

Gail Wekenborg, a Lunch Bunch member, has volunteered to prepare lunches for UMW meetings in February, March, and April.  All money collected will go to missions; a $5.00 donation is requested.  Gail will also want the hostess circle to help prepare some of the food, and to wash the table toppers if used.  She will use paper plates and will be responsible for washing the tablecloths.

Juanita reminded us that the School of Missions will be held at Central Methodist in Fayette, has children sessions and welcomes men.

Rochelle Meyer represented the Lunch Bunch in inviting or challenging members to participate in their blanket party February 7 at Jana Fox’s.  They will be making fleece lap blankets for homebound and shut-ins, to be distributed by the Compassionate Visitors.  She noted that the Lunch Bunch members are listed in the program book.  Their next meeting is Wednesday, February 13, 12: noon1:00.  All are welcome to come laugh and pray with them.

Ruth Circle Chair Pauline McElroy announced their next meeting is Tuesday, February 12, 9:30 in Room 107.  Louise Schreiber will present a book review.

Rachel Circle Chair Ann Maxwell announced their meeting is Monday, February 18th at 7:00 pm with program planned by Lauren Cameron.

Naomi Circle Chair Jean James announced their next meeting is on Wednesday, February 13, 1:00 pm at Kathleen Ailor’s.   Marylin Durk will give the program on her participation of the Church’s mission trip last summer to Mozambique.

Members who attended the District Training Meeting were asked to report.  In Barbara Ulmer’s group they talked about what she should be doing as Social Action Chair, but she noted that this is her last year in that position.  Treasurer Alice Gruner enjoyed visiting Harper Chapel Church.  Edith Noll went to the District session and found out there were 32 five-star units last year.  Our Jefferson City unit was especially outstanding, with 117% of programs accomplished.

Shirley Link is the Shepherdess from the District to our Unit.  She reminded us that the next District meeting will be Saturday, March 15, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm at New Bloomfield.  Dr. Marianne Inman, Central Methodist University President, will speak on the State of Public Education.  Lunch at this meeting will be $6.00, and reservations should be made by March 8 to luckyd@socket.net.

The District Retreat will be Saturday June 14, at Missouri UMC in Columbia.  Diana Revelle will lead the retreat on “Rooted and Grounded” in the love of God.  Registration and $5 fee for lunch are due June 2.

Respectfully submitted,
