UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

FEBRUARY 7, 2007

The United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church, Jefferson City, Mo, met on Feb 7, 2007 at 10 AM in room 107.  President Shirley Link called the meeting to order.  She welcomed members and visitors, introducing Carol Smith as the speaker for today’s program.  Terena Schaefer and Carol Harris were thanked for all the hard work they did in preparing the yearbooks.  The UMW purpose was repeated by the members.  Hymn 583 was sung with Louise Schreiber playing the piano.

It was announced that Nancy Duhamel is recovering from surgery.

Ann Maxwell gave the devotional based on the theme of “Love.”

Church Eternal was presented by Pastor Chris Dumas to remember our loved ones and Twyla Henry as she lit a candle.

The Secretary’s report was given by Carol Harris.  Minutes were passed out to read.  She mentioned that Ruth Circle delivers alter flowers in February.  She also said there are some changes to the yearbooks.  In Rachael Circle, Sheila Scott is co-chairman, not Mary Lou Gillilan.  Debbie Langston is a member of Rachael Circle.  Barbara Young is a member of Ruth Circle.

Alice Gruner gave the Treasurer’s report.  December beginning balance was $1486.74.  Receipts totaled $334 and Disbursements $862.70, leaving an ending balance of $958.04.  It was noted that a check was returned for PATCH as that program has been discontinued.  Jan 2007 receipts were $810 and disbursements $255.25, leaving a Jan 31 balance of $1512.79.

Janet Hofstetter gave a report on the books in the library that are on the UMW book list.  She reviewed Taught by America: A Story of Struggle and Hope in Compton.

Mission Coordinator Joann Oehrke reported the legislative event will be in February.

Margaret Allen reported Church Women United met on Jan 19.  Their next meeting will be March 2 at First Presbyterian Church.  All were invited to join CWU and to attend the meeting.

Dorothy asked for volunteers for Chili Day Feb 26.  She needs hostesses to guide people on Monday, and people to cut up carrots and celery on Sunday after church.

Ann Maxwell reported on the Chili Day bazaar.  Lesser priced items seemed to sell best, but not any particular items.  Food and books did well.  She passed around a sign-up sheet for help.  Donations for the bazaar can be given to Terena.  She has a sheet on which to list items, suggested selling price, donor’s name, and what to do if the item does not sell.  A suggestion was made that the meal tickets should also mention the bazaar.

Clarice Shemwell asked the group to watch the ads and buy items on sale for the kits.  Nail clippers are one suggestion.

Ruth Circle will be March UMW hostess.  The yearbook lists UMW activities.  Pres. Link thanked the membership for her Special Membership Pin and for the ribbons for her “corsage.”  She also read a tribute to June Glaser.  Jan Hauser will be the church hostess until after the Mother’s Day Banquet.

The program was presented by Conference officer Carol Smith.  She spoke on “Mission Today” for UMW.  She shared the 2007 criteria comprised of 31 items to serve as goals for each local unit of UMW.  These criteria are changed yearly.  The categories include faith, hope, and love.  Awards are earned for meeting the criteria.  She discussed ways to meet the criteria and encouraged participation.

Meeting adjourned.  Lunch followed with Naomi Circle as hostess.  Blessing was given by Carol Smith.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Lamon, Substitute Secretary
