UNITED METHODIST WOMEN FUMC

December 2, 2009

The December meeting of the United Methodist Women was called to order by President Juanita Rampy at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 2, in Room 107.  She led the group in reciting the UMW Purpose, followed by a prayer.  Hostesses were the Naomi Circle, who decorated with a Christmas theme and provided dessert.  Lunch was prepared by Gail Wekenborg.

The district shepherdess for our unit is Gaye Irwin, a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.  She thanked us for inviting her and recognized our unit for many accomplishments.  She mentioned that 2010 books are available and that a district library has been started.  She was given a thank-you ribbon.

Shirley Link gave the devotional with the theme, “A Baby Changes Everything.”  She read a song by that name, which is sung by Faith Hill.  She asked the group how they felt when they first saw their own babies or grandbabies.  The hymn “What Child Is This” was sung, accompanied on the piano by Louise Schreiber.

Vice-president Pauline McElroy introduced Pastor Mark Dumas, who presented the program “2009 Waveland Disaster Response.”  Our church has sent a delegation to Waveland, Mississippi, for the past four years to help them deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Waveland was adopted by Jefferson City and other cities.  Our church’s involvement is under the auspices of UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief).  This past summer eight people from FUMC and three from Clinton, MO. went to Waveland.  The group included Carol and Dave Harris, Margaret Saunier, Ann and Jim Baumgartner, Jim Aslakson, Dudley Galloway, and Pastor Mark.  The group did painting, roofing, etc. on several homes that have been rebuilt.  A spring mission trip is being planned, but it will probably be somewhere closer (Waveland is a 15-hour drive).

The hymn “Here I Am Lord” was sung, accompanied by Louise.

The children’s choir of the FUMC Preschool sang three Christmas carols for the group.

Ribbons were presented to outgoing officers Pauline and Sheila Scott.  Pastor Mark said a prayer and installation of incoming officers for the coming year was held.  Each officer received a mission ribbon.

The 2009 Special Membership Recipients, for providing outstanding service to the unit, were announced.  They are Rochelle Meyer and Janet Hofstetter.  They were presented with pins.

Treasurer Barb Ulmer gave the monthly report.  She stated all bills are paid.  As of December 3 we have a balance of $1, 751.38.  A motion was made by Gail Wekenborg and seconded by Clarice Shemwell to accept the report.  The motion passed.

Pauline indicated that she had given a program for Ruth Circle on pledging and where the money goes which is pledged to UMW.  She said she could provide the program for other circles, if desired.  Circles should make their pledges for 2010 in December or January.

Dorothy Wagner, Social Action chair, indicated there is a scholarship available for the annual Legislative Event.

Ann Maxwell said that Naomi Circle is responsible for picking up the altar flowers in December.  It is recommended that a card to indicate where the flowers came from be put with the flowers.  These cards are available in the flower room (small room on the left just before entering the sanctuary).

Margaret Allen thanked all of those who helped with the Church Women United meeting held in the parlor in November.  It was well attended and enjoyed by those attending.

Clarice reminded us to save our Campbell Soup labels and that we needed to get started on the Mile of Pennies jar for next year’s Festival of Sharing.  We did not collect as much this past year as in previous years.

Juanita announced that the 2010 Program Books are here and one has been given to each Circle.  There is information on suggested programs for Circles.

Circle Reports:

Rachel:  Ann said that the annual Christmas party will be at her house on December 14.   The Chili Day and UMW Bazaar will be on February 22.  Ann said that there will not be a quilt donated this year, which constituted a large part of the money earned last year, so we really need to be planning our donations, food, etc.

Ruth:  Pauline said the Circle will have their Christmas meeting at Heisinger Bluffs.  She also mentioned that, in relation to next year’s programs, there would not be a tea in February unless someone stepped forward to be in charge of it.  It was a big success last year, but was a great deal of work.  The Unit will have the extra responsibilities this year of hosting both the Legislative Event and the Annual UMW Conference Meeting in September.

Naomi:  Will meet on Wednesday, December 9.

Lunch Bunch:  The Lunch Bunch will meet this coming Wednesday for lunch.  They will be making Christmas cards for shut-ins.

Janet said the ’09 book reports are due to her now, but at the latest by next Monday, December 7.  She gave us a new 2010 list -- New Books on the UMW Reading List Shelves for 2010.  The display that Janet had for this meeting contained books.

Janet encouraged everyone to check out Kristin Hilty’s Google group for our UMW, for discussion, to announce meetings, cancellations, or for sharing ideas.  It can be found at http://groups.google.com/group/fumc-umw.  There is also a link to it from the local unit’s UMW page.

The meeting was adjourned and a delicious lunch was enjoyed.

Respectfully Submitted,

Sheila Larkin Scott

Secretary
